Checkmate: Middle School Camp 2025

Jul 16, 2025

In a room full of middle schoolers, something unexpected happened. Often underestimated for their spiritual depth, they were captivated by the story of kings and kingdoms. The space itself echoed the theme: stone-like walls, chandeliers, and a red carpet transforming the hall into a royal court.

At this year’s Middle School Camp, Checkmate, teens explored the rise and fall of kings in the Old Testament, but more importantly, they encountered the enduring reign of a different kind of King: Jesus, who made the ultimate move that changed the game forever.

Throughout the week, speaker Joanna used the game of chess to frame spiritual truths. “In chess, whoever controls the center controls the game,” she said. “The same is true in our lives. When I put God at the center, I allow Him to be in control.” Teens reflected on King David, a flawed man who still sought God’s heart through repentance. One theme hit especially close to home: the struggle to hear God’s voice. Joanna led them into the cave with Elijah, who heard God not in fire or wind, but in a whisper. “God doesn’t need to shout,” she said. “But we do need to quiet the noise to hear Him.”

Many teens shared honestly during My Story night. One girl said, “I want to be close to God, but I feel ashamed to come.” Another admitted she keeps falling into sin and doesn’t know how to keep God first. Prayer circles formed. Tears flowed. Truth broke through.

The transformation didn’t stop there. A leader shared how campers began taking real steps to live differently like standing up to bullying or stopping gossip in their friend groups. One girl said her classmates noticed she didn’t gossip and asked what was different. Several shared how they had started talking to non-Christian friends about their faith.

Everything came full circle on the final day as the teens met a King unlike any other they had studied: Jesus, the one who didn’t demand a sacrifice but became one. His resurrection was described as the “checkmate move,” the unexpected twist when all hope seemed lost.

Fourteen-year-old Jana put it beautifully:

“Jesus has meant a lot to me since I was young… After YFC camps, I learned the actual meaning of having a relationship with God. He’s the only person who will always want my best. Whenever I come to a YFC camp, I get so excited for God here! So after camp is over, I’ll try to take practical steps to keep that flame going.”

The theme may have been chess and kings, but in the end, it was about something far deeper: the movement of young hearts toward the true King, and their bold decision to live for Him.
